چکیده

In the external nitrification (EN) biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge (AS) system, the nitrification process is removed from the BNR activated sludge system and performed ‘externally’ on an integrated nitrifying trickling filter (NTF). As such, optimum design and operation of the NTF is essential for reliable performance of the ENBNRAS system. Although information on the design and operation of NTFs is available in the literature, this experience is not directly applicable to the NTF in the ENBNRAS system. To address this deficiency, a full-scale ENBNRAS prototype was implemented at the Daspoort Wastewater Treatment Works (DWWTW) in Tshwane, South Africa. In this investigation an average apparent nitrification capacity of approximately 1.25 to 1.29 gN per m2 of media surface area per day [gN/(ms2·d)] ammonia removal was determined for 2 existing rock media TFs retrofitted as NTFs in the prototype ENBNRAS system (nominal surface area of 45 ms2/m3 for the rock media). This nitrification capacity corresponded to a removal efficiency of about 14 mgN/l (96%), or 149 kgN/d, of the influent ammonia load applied to the NTFs (average influent flow rate of 10 Ml/d). General concordance was found with corresponding nitrate and nitrite production and alkalinity usage measurements, which substantiated the observed removal performance. This paper details determination of the nitrification capacity of the 2 rock media NTFs used in the prototype ENBNRAS system.

Comparison of Plastic Trickling Filter Media for the Treatment of Swine Lagoon Effluent

Plastic media trickling biofilter technology is being used on a pilot-scale to treat swine lagoon wastewater for use in a hydroponic greenhouse system. Two treatments of 9 filters each were installed to compare the treatment performance of commercially available BioballsTM and recycled soda six-pack rings and to verify a mathematical description of nitrification in a trickling filter. Determini...

Design Model Parameter Analysis for Nitrifying Trickling Filters.

Nitrifying trickling filters (NTFs) represent an effective technology for water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) to achieve compliance with ammonia-N permits. However, while the potential benefits of NTFs are many, the design methods and associated parameter databases are underdeveloped. Research herein focused on analysis of pilot-scale NTF data to develop enhanced design guidance. rn(ma...

Effect of Heterotrophic Activities on Nitrous Oxide Emission during Nitrification under Different Aeration Rates

EXTENDED ABSTRACT Nowadays, biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes have been applied widely for wastewater treatment. However, one type of greenhouse gases, nitrous oxide (N2O), can be released from both nitrification and denitrification during BNR. In our previous study, we found that N2O emission during nitrification could be affected by heterotrophic activities significantly in a BNR sy...

Troubleshooting of Nitrification Upsets at Pharmaceutical Wastewater Treatment Plant

A synthetic pharmaceutical manufacturing facility was experiencing recurring upsets of nitrification at its wastewater treatment plant. The main treatment train consisted of trickling filters followed by a conventional activated sludge process with ostensibly adequate treatment capacity (average F/M of 0.1, COD/MLSS-based). An evaluation of the plant’s operating conditions and performance indic...

External nitrification in biological nutrient removal activated sludge systems.

A biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge (AS) scheme incorporating external nitrification in a fixed media system is evaluated. A laboratory scale investigation of the scheme indicates that it holds considerable potential for BNRAS system intensification through major reduction in sludge age and oxygen demand and significant improvement in sludge settleability. Because the BNRAS sys...
